  • FAQ/Common Issues
  •   Echeveria 'Big Red' is a drought-tolerant succulent cultivar from the Crassulaceae family, native to Mexico's mountainous regions where it grows naturally in rocky, well-draining soils. It grows well both indoors and outdoors.

The rosettes form symmetrical clusters of thick, fleshy paddle-shaped leaves that reach 6-8 inches across. Leaves have deep red and burgundy coloration along the edges, intensified by a powdery coating that deepens in bright light. The foliage grows 4-6 inches tall, creating a compact rosette with a red hue.

It produces tall flower stalks with bell-shaped blooms in coral-pink to orange tones during late spring and summer, with arching stems that extend well above the rosette. The leaves are waxy and succulent, storing water to sustain the plant through dry periods.

Move it outside for summer growing and rotate it regularly for even development. It tolerates dry heated air indoors during winter and needs protection from rain when grown outdoors. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It is pet-safe around cats, dogs, and children.

  •   Echeveria 'Big Red' grows well in bright indirect light or direct sun but scorches in intense south-facing windows.

Water it deeply every 7-10 days during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

'Big Red' does best in well-draining succulent soil mix with added perlite or pumice for optimal drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 65-80°F and cannot tolerate frost below 32°F.

'Big Red' is a slow-growing rosette succulent requiring minimal fertilizer. Apply diluted succulent food monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and cannot survive frost below 32°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, southern Texas, southern Arizona, southern Nevada, coastal Oregon, Louisiana, southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, coastal South Carolina, and coastal Georgia. Indoor cultivation allows enthusiasts in colder climates to enjoy this red rosette succulent year-round.
  • Q: Is Echeveria 'Big Red' safe for pets and children?
A: It contains no toxic compounds and is safe around cats, dogs, and children.

Q: How big do the rosettes get?
A: Echeveria 'Big Red' forms rosettes that typically reach 6-8 inches across and about 4-6 inches tall, staying compact and manageable in containers.

Q: What kind of light does 'Big Red' need indoors?
A: Bright indirect light or direct morning sun works best; protect it from intense afternoon sun and rotate regularly to prevent leaning toward the light source.

Q: How often should I water during winter?
A: During winter dormancy, water 'Big Red' every 2-3 weeks instead of the weekly 7-10 day schedule used during active growth.

Q: How do I propagate 'Big Red'?
A: Remove healthy leaf cuttings or separate offset rosettes forming around the base, then allow cut surfaces to dry for 2-3 days before placing on well-draining soil to root.

Q: Can it survive extended travel?
A: It can easily survive a 10-day trip without care since 'Big Red' stores water in its thick leaves.
