Discovered in Argentina and named for its finder, Ipheion 'Alberto Castillo' is more vigorous than its cousins and sports larger flowers. The showy, white blooms with stripes on the reverse appear in great profusion over blue-tinted foliage. The leaves give off a slight scent of onions when bruised.
Ipheion makes cheerful carpets of sweetly fragrant, 1″ star-shaped flowers beginning here in northern Connecticut in April. Plants grow just 3–5″ tall, so they're ideal for edging a spring border or naturalizing under deciduous trees and shrubs, where they soon spread to form impressive colonies. The foliage will persist until hot weather arrives, and then re-emerge from dormancy in late-September. Seedlings may not retain the same color as the parent, so remember to deadhead if you wish to keep your planting intact.
